Difference between death registration and death certificate

A death certificate is an official document in which the death of a person is recorded and based on which a death certificate is issued.

The death certificate, which is the summary of the death transcript, is a sheet that is prepared and issued based on the contents of the death certificate.

Article 22 of Iran Civil Registration Law

The death of Iranians living abroad must be reported to the consular officers of the place of residence, the nearest consular officers of Iran, or the civil registration organization. Any of the following persons can also announce the death of an Iranian living abroad:

  • The closest relative of the deceased
  • The keeper or owner of the place where the death occurred or his representative
  • Any person who was present at the time of death

Required documents for death registration and certificate issuance

In order to register the death of Iranians living abroad, the following documents are required, while the administrative affairs are done through the MIKHAK system.

  • Completing the death registration request form in the system
  • The original death certificate issued by the relevant authorities of the country of residence (if the death occurred in a third country, the original death certificate must be translated and certified by the Iranian representative in the country of death.)
  • New birth certificate of the deceased and if it is not available, the original valid Iranian passport or national identity card
  • The original authentic Iranian certificate announcing the death event
